When the clouds gather and the wind picks up, you know bad weather is on its way. Whether you’re driving home in the pouring rain or watching the storm from the comfort of your living room, violent wind and weather can be unsettling — especially when the power goes out. In addition to the inconvenience of no light or cable, you face other issues when the power goes out, such as the inability to open your garage doors.
A garage door opener without a battery backup will not work after a power outage because there is no electricity. When your door won’t open or close, it’s a problem. Whether you’ve pulled into your driveway and realised you can’t get into the house, or you’re trapped inside with no way to get your car from the garage, it’s a problem. With the wind howling and the lightning flashing, you have to wonder if you can manually open a garage door. We’re here to help you get that door to budge, no matter what the weather.
Manually opening the Garage
Stay calm if your garage door stops working after a power outage. Every modern garage should have an emergency release kit, which is a system installed in your garage that allows you to open the door manually from the inside or outside. If you lose power and need to get out to drive to work or get in during a heavy rainstorm, you can use a few simple steps to successfully open your garage door.
Opening Manually from Inside:
- Unlock the door: Locate any locks or latches over the front of the garage door and ensure they are open — so they don’t interfere with manually opening the door.
- Remove the opener: Unplug the power cord from the keyless entry opener.
- Look for the emergency release cord: Locate the flapper valve cord, which has a red handle as well as hangs from the garage door track’s centre rail. This red cord connects to the conveyor belt, which connects your garage door arm to this centre track. When the garage door is closed, only use the airbag sensor handle.
- Pull the cord: Pull the inlet valve handle down. This cord should detach the screen door from the trolley and start moving it manually.
- Lift the garage door: Pull directly from the bottom again until the door stops moving, then let go and back your keys out of the ignition.
- Close the door: Once you’re outside, pull a door down correctly to shut it. If your door has a lock bar, slide it to the lock position
Closing the Garage Door Manually
As a result of the previous step, the garage door will now be able to move freely between open and closed positions. If you can’t physically raise the door due to its weight, you most likely have a broken spring. Many people are unaware that garage door openers, rather than springs, lift the door. If you discover a broken spring, please contact us immediately for expert assistance.
- Pull the emergency release cord in the direction of the door: Pull the release cord toward the door to re-engage the carriage and resume electrical control of your garage door. When the spring lever is compressed, the two components will be able to connect.
Safety Tips
Disconnect the automatic door opener: Before attempting to manually open or connect your garage door, disconnect the garage door opener. If power is restored, the opener may attempt to open the door while it is still disconnected, making reconnecting more difficult.
How to Reboot a Sliding Door Following a Power Failure
If your garage door opener stopped working after a power outage, reconnecting your garage door to the opener could be the solution. If you’ve tried reconnecting and nothing works, it’s time to call a garage door technician.
How to Avoid Having to Manually Open a Garage Door
If your garage door won’t open or isn’t working after a power outage, you might wonder if there’s anything you can do to keep it running even when there’s no power. In the event of a power outage, it’s always a good idea to know how to manually open your garage door. You can, however, avoid the panic and inconvenience by installing an automatic garage door opener with a backup battery feature.
With a backup battery, your garage door will open even if the power goes out, as will your keypad, opener, and safety sensors.
