Garages are typically musty, damp, dark, and out of date spaces. This is not their fault. Many garage spaces were built when cars were smaller (and probably before the concept of a “man cave”).
Replace the light bulbs in your garage with LEDs to transform it. LED lighting is the wave of the future. They last longer, are brighter, and offer the best bang for your buck.
Here are some simple ways to improve the lighting in your garage:
The Difference Between Lumens and Wattage
You’ll quickly find yourself deciphering a language of lumens and wattage if you immerse yourself in the world of lightbulbs. One tip for upgrading your garage lights is to ignore wattage for the time being and instead focus on lumens. Lumens are a unit of brightness, and if your garage is dark, you’ll want to brighten it up.
The conversion of watts to lumens can be deceptive. Sometimes the equation doesn’t work out. For example, some manufacturers will claim that a 9-watt LED can replace a 100-watt incandescent, but this will only provide 1,000 lumens when a 14-watt LED is required.
If all of that makes your head spin, follow these guidelines and concentrate on lumens.

A temperature range of 4600k to 6500k will produce a bright blue-white light. The blue-white colour scheme is ideal for workspaces and is most likely what you’ll need for your garage. The 2000k to 3000k range will give you a soft white, more yellowish hue. Most people prefer softer lighting for relaxing indoor spaces such as spas.
Consider LED Elements
Because your garage isn’t as well-insulated as the rest of your house, buy LEDs that can withstand temperature changes. Unheated garages experience freezing temperatures in the winter and scorching heat in the summer. Before replacing old bulbs in your garage, make sure to check the temperature ranges that your LED can withstand.
You’ll save even more money if you use light timers and dimmers in addition to using energy-efficient LEDs. When you are not using your lights, timers will turn them off automatically. Dimmers reduce light levels. Both will help you save energy and money on your next utility bill. While dimmers are not permitted in a garage, timers can be used because you will not be present.
You can also purchase smart bulbs. These LED smart bulbs connect to your smartphone and can be controlled by a smart home device like an Amazon Alexa or Google Home. Because you can programme your LED lights, smart bulbs can replace timers.
Why Make the Change?
LEDs are popular for a reason: they are extremely energy efficient and will save you money in the long run. An incandescent light bulb is less expensive to purchase but more expensive to operate—the polar opposite of an LED light bulb. LEDs are up to 80% more energy efficient and waste only about 5% of the heat they generate.
Lighting accounts for 15% of an average home’s electricity usage, according to the US Department of Energy. LED lighting will save an average American household about $225 in energy costs per year. Not only is that a simple way to save money on your utilities, but it also amounts to a couple hundred dollars in savings!
Furthermore, LEDs can last up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. While the initial cost may be slightly higher than that of a standard incandescent bulb, you will have that LED for much longer and save more money in the long run.
